Telok Ayer: From Sinkehs to Towkays™ - Chinatown Cultural Tour

Description of Programme

Did you know that Telok Ayer Street once faced the seafront? Come explore Telok Ayer (‘Basin of Water’ in Malay), where thousands of Chinese immigrants once landed in the 19th century after a long voyage from China in search of a better life in Southeast Asia. Telok Ayer was the place where the Hokkiens made their home, many of whom became tycoons! Follow their rags to riches journey and visit the places where they had left their mark: places of worship, shophouses, back alleys and wells. Discover how the diverse communities – Chinese, Indian and Malay – settled peacefully among each other in Chinatown. Participants will also learn about a distinctive style of architecture that evolved here, which is reflective of Singapore’s multicultural character. Sites covered a.
