KAMPONG GLAM “LIVE” VIRTUAL TOUR “THE ORIGIN STORY”

Description of Programme

“Live” Virtual Tour

“Live” Virtual Tours are suitable alternatives to outdoor NE tours. Participants will join in via a video platform and a “live” video stream will be established with the guide on-site. Follow the guide around various places of interest, hear their stories, and interact via a live chat box. Be engaged in online games (e.g. Bingo, spot the difference, etc) to increase engagement and have fun while learning.

“The Origin Story”

Let us take you on a virtual journey around the old Royal Citadel. Visit the palace of the Malay Sultan and the royal family, see where they prayed, and even where some of them are buried today. Feel the local Malay culture infused through the area as you breeze through the lively streets where traditional trades meet new-age boutique hipster shops. Reaffirm the importance of harmony in Singapore through a deeper cultural understanding of our people.

Sites to Cover

• Sultan Mosque (Places of Worship)

• Istana Kampong Glam (Royal Heritage)

• Alsagoff Arab School (Inclusive Education)

Learning Objective / Total Defence Pillars

NE Messages
1. Singapore is our Homeland; this is where we belong
2. We must preserve racial and religious harmony

TD Pillars:
1. Social Defence
2. Psychological Defence

Key Takeaways
• Harmony and tolerance is only possible through a deep understanding of our neighbours. To this end, deepen your understanding of Islam, understand the impact religion had on the area, and how the annual Hajj was instrumental in driving the economy.

• Apart from religious differences, business differences can also often lead to conflicts. See how traditional trades can exist alongside new-age businesses, and how religious sites can be located just a stone’s throw away from entertainment outlets. This is possible only with mutual respect and understanding of all stakeholders in the area.

• Learn about place-making, a key concept in building the liveable, and vibrant city that we live in. Also explore the topic of conservation and why this is important despite our push towards modernisation.
