An island nation like Singapore has always depended on the sea for its living, yet many Singaporeans are unaware of the role it plays in ensuring the economic future of Singapore. "The Sea Around Us" tour examines the role of the Singapore River from its earliest days to its current transformation as a vibrant F&B and tourism hub. Participants will also learn of Singapore’s port, its history and the iconic landmarks rooted in Singapore’s maritime heritage, and its current status as one of the world’s leading ports. Sites to be visited – Fort Canning Hill, Singapore River, One Fullerton, Clifford Pier, Singapore Maritime Gallery Specific Learning Points • Early 14th century accounts of Singapore as a maritime centre before the arrival of the British. The importance of trade and the rise of Singapore as an entrepot port and the role of the Singapore River. Singapore, a magnet for immigrants and traders. Fort Canning and its maritime significance. • Port development from tongkangs to containers. Singapore Port as an economic sector and employment generator. • Contribution of Maritime activities to Singapore’s overall economy. Role of Singapore as a Logistics Hub. The reasons and advantages of the move to Tuas. • Security at the Seas – changing landscape and challenges.
